A recent scam reported to RECA highlights how convincing fraudsters can be when targeting Albertans looking for affordable rental housing. A consumer named came forward after nearly falling victim to an elaborate rental scam—and their story is a powerful reminder that fraud can happen to anyone.
What Happened
The consumer found a home listed for rent on Facebook Marketplace. It looked like a good opportunity, and the scammer seemed helpful and responsive. But there was one major problem: the home wasn’t actually for rent—it was for sale.
When the consumer contacted the property owner to confirm the listing, they were shocked to learn it was a scam.
The Scam Details
Here’s what the scammer did:
- Posted a home on Facebook Marketplace using photos stolen from a real estate listing.
- Claimed to be the owner of the home.
- Told the potential renter that the home was “no longer for sale” and was instead for rent.
- Tried to collect personal and financial information as well as a deposit sent by e-transfer through a false rental application.
This was not just a simple online post—it was a calculated scam designed to deceive and take advantage of people searching for affordable housing
