Buying or Selling? Know the Forms Before You Sign

Buying or selling real estate can be overwhelming—even for experienced consumers. Every transaction involves important decisions, and often, a lot of paperwork.
Taking time to review some of the forms a licensee may ask you to sign can help ease uncertainty and give you the confidence to ask the right questions.
Below are sample forms and agreements commonly used by licensees when working with consumers. Getting familiar with them in advance can make the process smoother and less stressful.
Written Service Agreements
In Alberta, licensees in residential real estate, property management, mortgage brokerage, and condominium management must sign a written service agreement when entering client relationships.
These agreements clearly outline the licensee’s role, the services provided, and the responsibilities of both parties—helping to reduce confusion and prevent disputes in client relationships.
Even in sectors where it’s not mandatory, RECA encourages all licensees to use written service agreements. As a consumer, asking for one—whether in commercial or rural real estate—gives you a clear understanding of what to expect and helps protect your interests throughout the client relationship.
